Buddy Interview

Where is your exchange buddy from?

He’s from Shanghai.

What made you want to be a buddy to an exchange pupil?

I just thought I could give the students a good opportunity to connect with British pupils as I can speak quite a bit of Mandarin myself so I could introduce them to this country well.

How have you been helping your buddy settle into the Mountbatten school?

I have been getting him to talk to some of my friends in English, simple sentences to begin with, and now all of us can have a chat together. I have helped him to be included and join in all my lessons in the school day.

What is your favourite lesson to go to with your buddy?

Maths is my favourite because I finally have someone who is fantastic at maths like me and can challenge me in class!

What have you learned from your buddy?

I have learned a lot more Mandarin as I was good at reading and writing but it’s been a good chance to get better at speaking and listening in conversations, as well as learning all about life in China.

Why do you think it is important to do these exchange programmes?

It is important as it is beneficial to help me learn a language and also means I can learn about cultures different to my own. I think it will be helpful for my CV later on and I can tell people I have experience in taking care of people who are new to the country as well as communicate with people all over the world.

Has it been fun being a buddy?

Oh yeah definitely!

Would you do it again?

I’d love to do it again! It has been a great experience for me and I hope my buddy has enjoyed his time in the UK and at Mountbatten.
