ABOUT GLOBAL SCHOOL EXCHANGES

Exchange opens up the world.

Global School Exchanges connects schools, students and educators across countries and cultures — creating opportunities to learn from one another, build lasting relationships and see the world from a different perspective.

We believe international exchange should do more than take people somewhere new. It should create experiences and relationships that help prepare young people — and the schools that educate them — for an increasingly connected world.

OUR STORY

From one connection to a global network.

Our story began in 2011, when Tom Saunders founded Opportunity China, connecting graduates and educators with schools and education partners across China.

Through those relationships, something new began to emerge. Education partners increasingly wanted students to experience British education first-hand — not simply to visit the UK, but to spend time inside British schools and experience school life.

In 2014, that demand led to the establishment of Opportunity Education Services and the beginnings of what would become Global School Exchanges.

But bringing schools together exposed a challenge.

International demand existed and UK schools had something the world valued — even if they didn’t always recognise how highly British education was regarded overseas. Yet safeguarding, accommodation, administration and limited staff time made traditional exchanges increasingly difficult to deliver.

We set out to build the bridge between the two.

From those early UK–China programmes, GSE has developed into an international organisation connecting schools, students, educators and school leaders across a growing network.

EXCHANGE WITH PURPOSE

Preparing young people for a world beyond borders.

“We don’t know exactly what jobs today’s students will do or where their careers will take them. But we can prepare them to approach the wider world with confidence, curiosity and the ability to work with people different from themselves.”

Schools have always had to prepare young people not only for the world as it is today, but for the world they will inherit.

Their future careers may involve international colleagues, customers, organisations, ideas and opportunities — whether they eventually work on the other side of the world or within their own community.

We believe an international perspective is an important part of that preparation.

International experiences can build confidence and curiosity in students, create professional learning for teachers and give senior leaders new perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing education.

International exchange shouldn’t be another thing for a school to do. It should help a school achieve what it is already trying to do.

MAKING EXCHANGE POSSIBLE

International ambition without the extra burden.

For many UK schools, the desire to connect internationally hasn’t disappeared. The time and capacity required to manage a traditional exchange has.

Safeguarding, accommodation, communication, administration and programme coordination can make hosting an international group difficult — particularly when school teams are already stretched.

GSE was developed to help remove those barriers.

We provide the relationships, coordination and practical support that enable schools to participate in international exchange while focusing on what they do best: education.

OUR AMBITION

A gateway between schools.

Our ambition is to build a global community through which schools can find one another, learn from one another and create opportunities together.

For us, the word exchange isn’t limited to students travelling between two countries.

An initial connection might lead to a student visit, an educator learning trip, a reciprocal programme, a shared project, a leadership collaboration or something neither school had anticipated when the relationship began.

We want GSE to become a gateway through which those possibilities can develop.

THE NEXT CONNECTION

The programme is only the beginning.

A visit can become a friendship.

A conversation between teachers can become a shared project.

An international experience can inspire a student, a teacher or a school leader.

A school that welcomes a group today can create opportunities for its own community tomorrow.

And one connection between two schools can develop into a relationship that benefits hundreds of young people who follow.

Let’s create the next connection.
